FAQ IconMANUALLY UPDATING FIRMWARE

Firmware is available on the portal at https://blackgatemobile.com. Under the firmware menu. Be sure to download the correct firmware for the given device. All firmware on the firmware page is the latest stable version unless otherwise noted. 

  1. Download the appropriate firmware to their computer. 
  2. Unzip the archive file containing two files for the firmware update.
  3. Delete all files off of the SD card and copy the two firmware files.
  4. Paste the two files onto the SD card. There must be not other files or folders on the SD card.

Installing Firmware on the R4G

Ensure the device is turned off and insert the SD card into the device. Turn on the device and follow the prompts to update the firmware. If there is no prompt, ensure the SD have the two files and there are not other files or directories on the SD card. 

DO NOT turn off the device during the firmware update. Once the update is complete, a message display saying to restart the device. Turn off the device and remove the SD card. Clear the SD card of all files and re-insert it into the device.

Confirm the device has the latest firmware by navigating to the menu -> Advanced -> Firmware

Installing Firmware on the R4G LITE

Ensure the device is turned off and insert the SD card into the device. Turn on the device. All LED lights should start flashing

DO NOT turn off the device during the firmware update. Once the update is complete, the LEDs will stop flashing and turn off. Turn off the device and remove the SD card. Clear the SD card of all files and re-insert it into the device.

Confirm the device has the latest firmware once it connects to the server and check-in.

To format the SD card.

  1. Turn of the device.
  2. Press the menu button.
  3. Navigate the menu and go to ADV -> "Format". Select it.
  4. Select yes

Once the card is formatted, the "busy" message will disappear.

FAQ IconHOW TO FORMAT THE SD CARD - R4G LITE

To format the R4G Lite SD card, ensure the device has at least 068 firmware. 

  1. Turn on the device and immediately press and hold the format button until the format LED blinks.
  2. Once the format is complete, the device will begin to start up as normal.

Older Firmware

If the device is on older version below 068, formatting manually can be an issue. If the device starts up, formatting can be done but waiting for the signal light to come on and then pressing and holding the format button down until the format LED starts to flashes.

TROUBLESHOOTING

FAQ IconDEVICE IS NOT SENDING MEDIA TO THE APP
  1. Ensure there is a data plan activated for the device.
  2. Ensure the device is on the latest firmware for the device.
  3. Ensure that the antenna is tight and that the batteries are good.
  4. It is IMPORTANT that you move to an area that you know has signal and is outside away from buildings and other electronics.
  5. Format the SD Card manually on the device.
  6. If the device does not connect still, try a new SD card and ensure to format the card before trying again.

If the device still does not work, try manually updating the firmware. If you are on the latest firmware, reflash the device with the latest firmware.

This message indicates that there is no cell signal available. Move to another area and try again. 

FAQ IconSAME IMAGE OVER AND OVER

Attempt to format the SD card. If this does not work, exchange the SD card with a new one. 

FAQ IconANDROID NOT COMPATIBLE MESSAGE

Google Play has recently put in place restrictions for devices that use Android OS older than one year of age. 

We highly recommend updating your OS Software to the latest version available.

FAQ IconWhat SD cards are compatible with my camera?

The R4G-GEN2 and R4G-LITE+ devices require a Class 10/U3 SD card. The R4G-PRO does not require a SD card. We recommend Black Gate or SanDisk brand cards for the best performance.

FAQ IconDo I have to buy the biggest data plan in order for all devices to share a lump sum of data?

No. You can mix and match data plans for what best suits your layout of cameras. Any data purchased on cameras is shared amongst your entire fleet.

FAQ IconDo you offer a yearly subscription instead of monthly?

We only offer monthly at this time. There are no activation or deactivation fees for turning the cameras on and off.

FAQ IconIs there a limit to how many cameras I can register to my account?

You can put an unlimited number of cameras on your account. There are no limitations.

FAQ IconCan I track my camera with GPS if it's lost or stolen?

The only model with active GPS is the R4G-PRO. The Lite+ and R4G-GEN2 do not have active GPS, but we can track the SIM card and give you an approximate location for the last time the device was turned on and connected.

FAQ IconHow do I update my payment method on file?

Log in at blackgatemobile.com, go to the Account tab, and select 'Edit Billing Information' to update your card on file.

FAQ IconHow do I deactivate my camera(s) to end data subscriptions?

Log in at blackgatemobile.com(same login as the app). Your camera dashboard will load. You will be able to select Deactivate. This stops billing for the camera(s) selected. Be sure to deactivate all cameras if you choose to store them for the off-season.

FAQ IconHow do I add a shared user?

Adding a shared user is very simple and user-friendly. Open up the Black Gate Mobile App, and on the dashboard page, you will see a small human icon with the + (plus) sign in the top-right corner. This is where you can add and remove shared users, as well as add and remove access to specific devices.

FAQ IconHow do I know which firmware version my camera is currently on?

While on the mobile app, please use the dashboard to access the camera whose firmware you want to check. Click the settings wheel. You will see at the very top all information pertaining to this device including the firmware version.

FAQ IconHow do your data plans work?

Every camera needs a data plan, but you only need to size up your first one. For example, 1GB for $15. Add the rest on the $3 plan; all your data pools together and shares across your fleet. Track usage anytime in the app or at blackgatemobile.com.

OLDER ANDROID MOBILE APPLICATION DOWNLOAD

As of August 31, 2023, Google Play has discontinued support for mobile devices that run on older version of Android. In some cases, devices that are fairly new will fail to support to our new mobile application. This is because the vendor of the device (Verizon, T-Mobile, etc) have not updated the software they provide.
